Sinfonieorchester Basel
Sol Gabetta, cello
Ivor Bolton, conductor
Ferruccio Busoni: Lustspiel-Overture, op. 38
Camille Saint-Saëns: Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, op. 33
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 in Es, op. 55, Eroica
For this Sunday Classics season opener, Gabetta joins the Basel Symphony Orchestra for Saint Saëns’ Cello Concerto. Considered by Shostakovich and Rachmaninov to be the greatest of all cello concertos, it is also among the most demanding for the soloist, so you can expect high octane musical gymnastics!
The orchestra concludes the programme with one of Beethoven’s most celebrated, large-scale masterworks: the Eroica. Marking the beginning of the composer’s creative middle-period, this, the third of Beethoven's symphonic output, started of it's life as a celebration of Napoleon and his humanist ideals, but turned in to the epitome of symphonic forms.
